The Battle of Berlin (April 16, 1945 – May 2, 1945), also known as the Fall of Berlin and the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation by the Soviet Union, was the last major offensive in the European Theatre. The Battle of Berlin started on April 16, when the Red Army encircled Berlin, after a series of successful battles against the German war machine. Fierce fighting occurred within the city, where the depleted German units fought the Red Army over control of the city. The Battle of Berlin ended on May 2, 1945, with the unconditional surrender of the City of Berlin.
